Over a period of about two years, I tried mutt periodically, only to
return each time to an "easier" mail client. But then came the time
about a year ago when I tried mutt and everything clicked; since then, I
haven't had any desire to go back to something "easier".

Once you get it set up right, mutt is easy to use, and it's incredibly
powerful. My advice (unsolicited, I know) would be to give mutt another
try in a few months. Also, if you subscribe to the mutt-users mailing
list, you can watch other people work through their questions about
configuring mutt, and can start using some of the cool techniques you
see described. Or at least that's how it's worked for me.
