[NTLUG:Discuss] after kernel update

Hi all:

I have update kernel to 2.4.14, it works.

question 1:
can I delete all these untar files and sub directories after I update them?
(I update these paclage before upgrade the kernel)
mkinitrd-2.5-1
util-linux-2.10
e2fsprogs-1.19
ksymoops-2.4.3
modutils-2.4.9-1

question 2:
what commend is use to turn power off?
for the old kernel (2.2.14), when I use shutdown command to shut down the 
box, it turn of the power.
but for the new kernel (2.4.14, I compile it), it does shutdown the OS, but 
the power still on, how do I make it automatically turn off?
