kmail seems to be missing some finishing touches to where it just doesn't
feel right, and doesn't behave the way I expect, but I don't remember why.

I tried balsa as well and had almost no luck. The look was good, but the
functionality was bad.

I am trying to install Ximian now. I started last night and it kept
segfaulting on the install. I am trying on another box today. It has to
un-install kdepim which should only break a few apps, like the organizer,
kmail and kpilot as far as I know, but I didn't get a reason for needing to
uninstall. I'll report back on the progress today.

My favorite mail client so far is still mutt, but I need better/easier
filtering and mailbox management.
