well, the PDF passed on by lee explain it well, but includes /opt, which I
don't like, but use on my Solaris. The idea is that /usr/local is used for
local installs, not OS specific. SO if I upgrade or reinstall I don't
overwrite the stuff I added in /usr/local
also, I have found it is easier to manage. less stuff in one location
easier to manage the files. It is all personal opinion really.
