Check your BIOS for powersave modes and disable them.  They can shutdown 
monitors, harddrives and NICs (if onboard) to conserve on power if idle for 
X minutes.  at least that is what it sounds like.
Some NICs also have built in BIOS that you can get to on boot (often 
something loike a SCSI where a message is displayed to hit CTRL-S to setup, 
common on Inter NICs), might want to check there as well.
