Sendmail has anything to do with this. If you run a IMAP Server ( I like
Cyrus )
you can run IMP ( php based ) which is a web based IMAP Client.
Works pretty well. I can give you access to my IMP client for some testing
if you'd like to see it in action.

One nice thing about IMP is that you can have one IMP front end and go to
multiple IMAP back ends. Since it uses strait IMAP protocol, the web based
client and the IMAP Server don't have to have any special
connection/relationship.
I could set up IMP to access my @charter.net mail since charter.net uses
IMAP.
