Use the route -n command to see if you have a default gateway that provides
access to the internet. If you don't have a default gateway then you will
need to add a route to specify it. This can be done with the route add
command, although in Mandrake it can probably also be done in one of the
network script or config files.
If you do have a default gateway, then see if you can ping it using its
dotted-decimal (numeric) address. If you can, then try pinging some other
external host using its numeric address (192.18.97.241 for www.sun.com).
If that works, then you have access to the internet. If it works, try
pinging www.sun.com by name. If that doesn't work, you're dns resolver is
probably not setup correctly. This is usually setup in the
/etc/resolv.conf file.
