Thanks for the advice.   I didn't make myself clear.  I had setup rp-pppoe as you said and got the connected! message.   I did an ifconfig ppp0 and saw my ISP address there.  I tried lynx and to my delight it connected and so did netscape.    I don't know what I did different but all my farting around this morning must have done something.   Miracles never cease.
Now to set up Masquerade.
