Whew! I'm safe, at least for now. Didn't do the trick. This is a new
install, so I'm still
picking up some pieces. I noticed when I telnet to some server, I do get a
response
from the server -- some mishmashed text -- I do get the login prompt, I
enter my login,
and cursor returns to first position in that same line without a linefeed.
I don't seem to
get any further response from server, and I can type on that one single
line all day long,
without the hassle of using any lower lines on the screen -- I guess that's
one way to
conserve resources.

But I will keep stty sane in my .bashrc. Anything that helps preserve my
sanity :-)
