I think the way linux auto starts network services is
through the network daemon, although I'm not certain
if this is typical for PPP. When you go into rescue
mode you might see if there is a symbolic link to the
network daemon in whatever run-level you are using
(usually 5 to use X). If the link to the network
daemon is there copy it to your /root folder and
reboot the machine (you can put the link back after
you get PPP running). Removing the network daemon link
from runlevel (5?) might eliminate the system hang by
stopping ppp from auto starting at boot. You might
also want to check /var/log/messages for startup
errors in the last lines if the problem persists......
