I think it depends on what you want to use this new skill for.
If you want to write Linux systems programs, perhaps games, stuff like
that - then you should learn C or C++.
If you want to add programs to your HTML/Javascripting abilities to
further enhance your web sites - then Java would be a natural next step.
If you just want to put together quick admin tools, process text files,
etc - then learn Python or PERL.
There are hundreds of other programming languages - but aside from those
I describe above, they are all either only marginally popular - or have
extreme niche uses.
Once you know which kind of language you wish to learn then try to locate
a mailing list or news group where that language is often discussed - and
check their FAQ to see what books and tutorials are recommended for learning
it.
Issues of "Which Programming Language Is Best" rapidly turn into Holy Wars,
so this is a 'dangerous' topic!
