You might want to take a look at
http://www.ferzkopp.net/Software/CloneIt/CloneIt.html

This seems like it would do what you want.

I think you can pass a ro argument to lilo but I'm not 100% sure.
I am almost 100% sure that the example you showed said
RO for the souce just so you didn't accidently run the wrong
command on the wrong machine and wipe out your original
system.
