Yes, I did the control-alt-F7and F8 and there were two sessions running.
I deleted the two lock files you mentioned, and it took care of that.
Thanks for the suggestion. I know have when I boot up and it goes
through all of the services starting a message saying something like 


"pam su user pparks starting session"
"pam su user pparks ending session"

It does this many times during the boot-up. I can not check my
/var/log/messages file, I think there is something wrong with my
messaging program that logs, I get errors on boot-up related to ATD. Not
sure how all this fits in, but I am trying to give as much info as I
can. Thanks.
