The library discussion has been good but way off the point Bobby is
making and the real problems that a Mandrake upgrade involves. I
started using Mandrake (IIRC) with 7.1 after getting real tired of RH
upgrade and forced admin tools (like linuxconf) that didn't work.
For the most part I've only heard of folks having problems in system
devices breaking with Mandrake upgrades. IIRC there was a big issue
with supermount in 8.0.
As with Bobby I've had to jump through hoops getting some devices
working again when I went to 8.1 from 8.0 on some machines. My CDRW
device went away completely after the upgrade. I've got CDR back but
haven't tried CRW yet. This was a 2 point problem, 1. /dev/cdrom link
was not connected since 8.1 didn't have /cdroms linked into /dev/cdroms,
2. I haven't got my ATAPI Zip resolved yet.
Bobby, I haven't done the work yet but I think the issue of getting the
CDRW to write will be in recreating the SCSI devices and making sure you
have your boot options include "hdc=ide-scsi" (if CDRW is device 2 in
your ide chain). That is if the 8.2 upgrade didn't fix it.
The only software that seems to be broke from an 8.0 to 8.1 upgrade was
netscape 4.77. Other than security updates that is.
For the most part I think Mandrake does an above average job on their
system upgrades. The software is very stable but the device management
has a ways to go yet.
Now I've gotten an 8.2 release in the mail so I've got to go through
this again.
