I had a problem with RH7.2 and the CD on my install.  Your's doesn't
sound quite the same, but who knows?  I found that the modules for
my CD drivers weren't being loaded.  "lsmod" will tell you what modules
are loaded.  I had to load cdrom.o and ide-cd.o manually just once, and
the system "remembered" them over a reboot after that.

It sounds to me like your system doesn't realize that you've swapped
out your floppy for your CD.
