Wouldn't it be simpler and less painful to use the Mandrake package
manager (Software Manager) and just install the 0.98 version that comes
with MDK 8.1?

The only problem you may have is setting up the ide-scsi emulation in
the kernel, but that is all automagicly done with Mandrake during the
install.
