Compatibility issues should not be at the OS level on this.  IIRC, all
ATA/100 drives run at ATA/66 levels, even w/o a controller card.  You do
need to use the newer style cable Blue/Gray/Black connectors to get the
drive to talk right.

You could buy a controller card but I'm not sure that a MB upgrade
wouldn't be money better spend there.

Why did the bootable disk stop?  Did you toast the boot sector or maybe
you've got a jumper set wrong?  Are you using the wrong cable (33 or 66
style) for the connector in the board?
