"Fred, If your running KDE you have the control center. From there you
can access the startup list and set the numlock on at bootup. KDE (IIRC all
shells) use the /etc/profile for system wide user init process."

Greg (and others) --- Thanks for all the input. The problem is not with KDE....
in fact, I have the numlock process now running at every stage of the operation
from bootup through the starting of KDE... the problem is now getting the
correct keyboard emulation AT THE LOGIN screen. In init3 (non-X) it is ok, in
KDE it is ok, but at the login screen the system (xdm?) uses some other
keyboard file. My bitch with the way Linux or any other unix is set up is that
something like this can happen at all. Once it is told that a particular piece
of hardware is being used, I shouldn't have to go tell every damned piece of
the system to use that hardware. That has been a pet peeve of mine about Unix
since I first started fighting with it 15 years ago. Grrrr!!!!! There are some
definite plusses to M$'s philosophy.... maybe not their implementation, but
you certainly have to give it to them for their ease of setup. Personally,
overall I much prefer Linux, but there are parts of it that suck big time. AND
they never get fixed.

Oh, well..... thanks again for all the help. Soapbox mode off.

Fred
