I understand your issues with keyboard mapping in *nix.  I never mess 
with my mappings so long as I have the standard keys.  I'm not a big num 
pad user so I don't need them on a regular basis.  I just hit the num 
lock when I have an app I want them for.

Again, back to the control panel.  You can set your keyboard in the 
hardware section.  This should setup your default keyboard across all 
apps.  If this doesn't do it for you reconfigure X and set it there. 
You should be running kdm as your login manager which does use the X setup.
