That is not correct. lame, gogo etc have been around for a while. They
have license problems that might prevent them from being shipped with
your distribution, but they are very easy to build and put in
/usr/local/bin
If you use gnome for you desktop (Or use gtk apps) then you might like
to look at grip, and point it at a locally compile lame encoder.
It works well for me.. has done for over a year..
