This sounds promising again how well would it work with a 486sx chip just piping the display from another box would be beneficial if I could get it to allow an autologin feature.

I don't know about a distro that can do all that but I know you can certainly make that 486 run as an Xwindows terminal. Check out http://www.ltsp.org/
I use it to boot some old 486's and Pentium 75's with 16mb of ram.
LTSP was started specifically to make use of older systems that otherwise would not be usable today.
If you are interested in that route, I can help you with the setup.
