Keep in mind that as long as your workstation hardware can display X (2meg vid cards seem to work best, but it really depends on what resolution you want), all of the application processing is done by the Server. So very little is actually needed of the 486 client's processor (it only needs to run the kernel that has been loaded over the network). While it is possible to run applications on the workstations, the default for LTSP is to run them on the Server.
As far as auto login goes, I don't have experience using this with LTSP, however the LTSP-discuss mail archives seem to suggest that it is possible:
