You might take a look at jabber: http://www.jabber.org/,
http://www.jabbercentral.org/, http://www.jabber.com

There are clients for many operating systems, both pay-for and free. I've
played with the jabber server on
my linux box, and have dinked around with the perl client, and a few
windows based clients. It's a really
nice system, and has a large developer base, mailing lists, etc.
