[NTLUG:Discuss] Login woes

Well, my upgrade from glibc 2.0->2.1 was successful, but now I'm trying to iron out
some little quirks.

Well, plus one big quirk:  For some reason, I can log in through the kdm/xdm
interface, but login fails when I try to do it from the console!  The log message
that is generated is:

Aug 24 10:32:41 turquoise login[278]: invalid password for `UNKNOWN' on `tty1' 

I can 'su' to root just fine, and I can log in remotely, so the passwords are OK.

Any suggestions?
