I think I'll join you in the flamage.  Sendmail is quite mature 
and universally accepted, but it's also dog slow.  Exhibit A:

Admins at the linuxfromscratch.org site have experienced similar 
results.  Sendmail got its rear end handed to it by postfix for 
their setup.
