I am trying to get Samba up and running on a new installation.
I have gotten to the point where the Linux box can get through the firewall
to the internet. I have modified the samba.conf so it is named correctly.
and is set up with user protections. The name of the box is "printserver"
I can see the server when I look at Windows 98 Network Neighborhood.
I have set up the users on the Linux box, and have set up a private
directory for each user, and a public directory for all users. Using the
utility in gnome.
I see the "printserver" with Windows 98 Network Neighborhood. But I can't
get access
to the files. I am pretty sure it is a problem with logging on from the
windows box. I set up a user with the same name and password on the windows
box as the Linux box.
When I double click on the printserver icon in Network Neighborhood a
password window pops up which looks like it is trying to log into
//printserver/ipc$ and asks for a password. And as a result I am stuck. I
don't know what ipc$ is. Is it a macro designation for the user name? How
do I make it the user I am logged in as?
I have tried turning off encrypted passwords, turning on encrypted passwords
and a few other things. Nothing seems to work.
I have the Sam's "Teach yourself Samba in 24 hours" book, and have looked at
the documentation, but I must be missing something obvious to experienced
users, because this problem is not addressed anywhere I can find. Since I
am relatively new to Linux I must be missing something.
