A fine kernel compilation primer!  Just one comment:

I've become very partial to running "make zdisk".  Just pop a floppy in before you
run it...then reboot.  If things fail, you can bail out by simply ejecting the
floppy and rebooting.  I'd definitely recommend this approach to someone who's
compiling the kernel for the first time.

Oh, and if your kernel doesn't fit on a floppy, it's too damn large.  There's no
reason for a kernel to ever be larger than a meg...personally, I never let my
kernels get larger than 500K.  If it's too large, instead of trying to compress it,
reconfigure some of the kernel functionality to be compiled as modules, then try
again.
