You know..I had the same thing happen to me once. Are you sure that the
correct root partition is specified in your lilo.conf? What filesystem does
your root partition use? Did you compile in the correct filesystem support
for that partition. Did you save your previous kernel and can you boot
that?
Hopefully you can run with those ideas and make some headway.
