ok completely separate nic question (no, I never had any trouble doing
multiple nics on linux) My problem is just getting a single! nic to work on
the other OS (or P.O.S., if you'd rather) I have a home theatre
convergence box that for numerous sad reasons, like no drivers, and
monopoly control of the marketplace, I must run on [that other OS, SE,
desktop version from '98]. This same nic, in the same pci slot, had [the
other OS] re-installed around it ( because some pci cards changed, and
they would NOT work untill the whole OS (or P.o.S) was reinstalled), and
then the nic wouldn't work anymore - 30% packet loss, unable to make
connections - tcpip driver upgrades, registry changes, pci slot changes,
everything and anything I have learned over the years to hack [the other
OS] into minimal functionality, and the best I could get was 3.5 MBps
connections _one_way_. traffic leaving the box would hang after a few
thousand bytes.
Here's where it gets good for you, the linux audience.
So I just reboot into linux. The nic works flawlessly at 6.5 MBps both
ways. (A cheap DEC Tulip card)
Moral of the story - a dual boot box is essential to trouble shoot [that
other OS]
P.S. If any one has a clue to fix this, I'd much appreciate it. And no,
"Just reinstall it", won' t cut it since I have tried that a dozen times
already.
