This is way out in left field I know, but may help you if you're still 
trouble shooting. 

I tried Open Office 638( or 638A? or 631?) on windows 95 original, and had a 
similar problem.  When I tried to open a document, it would pull up the OO.o 
taskbar item then proceed to crash. Sometimes the file would appear first, 
sometimes not.  However, I could start Open Office and open the same document 
without causing a crash.  

This particular problem went away when I upgraded from the IE5.0 java virtual 
machine to the current (at that time) sun Java VM.  I reinstalled 638 after I 
had an official sun java VM running (the one that came on the Netscape 6 CD) 
Open Office was much smoother.  However, 638 on windows was still very crash 
happy : Spell checking would shut the machine down (not just open office).  
Switching graph styles would crash the program.  Hitting the spacebar 
sometimes would crash the program.
