I second that on the window manager.  I used to run Slackware on a 486-66,
and I thought (at the time) that it was screamingly fast.   So I suggest
either a lighter window manager or an earlier (linux kernel 2.2)
distribution.  RH7.3 comes with XFree86 4.0 and probably assumes some
hardware acceleration which won't work on your older system (you can try
turning that off tho).
