[NTLUG:Discuss] Kernel Config Questions

I am a bit confused here. I remember doing a kernel recompile a while
ago (the only time I ever done this) and there was no use of rpms. I am
wanting to do a recompile now on a machine that is running Red Hat 8.0,
and I cant find the source. I remember that it was in like
/usr/src/linux2.4.18-whatever. Well, on the Red Hat 8.0 box, the
directory is not there. I am assuming this is because I did not choose
to install the source when I installed. I went to red hats page, and
they are talking about downloading rpms and extracting them. Is this the
same as if I downloaded the gz source file? shouldn't there be a tgz of
the kernel on the redhat cd? I may be blind, but I am not seeing it. Any
help is appreciated. Thanks.
