Steve, the pserver checkout procedure seems to work OK for source forge
projects using the following:

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous at cvs.yourproject.sourceforge.net:/cvs/yourproject
login
[after password prompt: depress ENTER, then checkout project by typing]
cvs -z8
-d:pserver:anonymous at cvs.yourproject.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/yourproject co
directoryname

After initial checkout you can use
cvs update
