Hmmm...all the power lights are off when it locks up?  That 
sounds to me like some power management problem there.  These 
are actually fairly common, whatever O/S you run.

On most distros, /var/log/messages is the standard catch-all 
bucket for syslog messages.  Kernel log messages (which is 
probably what you want) end up going there too; 
/var/log/kern.log often exists also, to hold nothing but 
kernel-generated log messages.
