It can use the swap on hda .. no probs with that at all. I use RedHat 8.0
whose / partition is on hda and swap is on hdb. Swap is also shared by
BlueLinux.

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] Two Hard Drives, Too many partitions
I have a hard drive "hda" with 4 partitions on it. The first with Windows
98, the second with Mandrake 8.1, the third with Mandrake 9.0 and the forth
is a swap partition. I have installed another HD "hdb"
When I use the new HD "hdb" for a new linux disto will I have to create a
swap partition on hdb or will that system use the swap on hda?
