You should look into Broadcast 2000. This program is
designed as a VIDEO editor for studio quality editing of TV
audio/video (as in a usable tool for small news programs,
etc.) The audio edit portions of this program are pretty
good, and it will read and write audio only files.
My copy will only output WAV audio, but I know WAV can be
converted to mp3 fairly easy in linux.. and i bet there are
plugins for broadcast that support compressed formats.
