Name the modem.

If it is a "Win-modem", you'll have to obtain software for it, (if it
exists), for Linux. "Win-modem" or "software modem" or "soft modem" are
terms for pseudo modems that dominate the market these days, (about 90%
worth), and are designed specifically for, (and only), for MS Windows.
They are liken to sound cards with software that enables the CPU to
carry on most of the normal functions of a modem and this software is
written for MS Windows (only). Modem drivers is what they call it, but
the fact is, a real modem needs no drivers.

If it is a PcTel winmodem, I can tell you how to get it running, I did
it once. Otherwise, maybe so, maybe no, (someone else may be better
qualified to help you). (Search for pctel on
http://home.cowtown.net/linux/notes.txt)

If it is in fact, a winmodem, my best advice to you is to buy a modem.
(Real modems work better anyway and leave your CPU free for other tasks.)

External modems are all hardware modems so those are your best bet, but
I think 3Com, (formally US Robotics), makes an internal hardware modem,
I think it's the "USR5695" or something like that, but that's the only
one I know of.
