[NTLUG:Discuss] Networking: USB to USB or Firewire to Firewire?

I think that I have seen both approaches done on
Windows. You'd think that it's been done on Linux
before but I didn't find any info on it.
Say that I have two linux boxes. Each has a spare
USB port and a spare Firewire port.
Can I cable these two boxes up directly and
transfer files between them?
I know that I can use a pair of USB ethernet
adapters and a cross over cable, but I want to
use something like a cross over cable between
the two machines and avoid getting two NICs.
I read that a Windows program would let you
do 400MBit between 2 Firewire boxes. USB2
is supposed to be fast too.
Thanks.
