It sounds like the nvidia.o module is either:
1) not under /lib/modules where it can be found (the makefile should've 
done this for you)
- or -
2) the /etc/modules.conf didn't get modified (the makefile should've done 
this for you)
- or -
3) you have a mismatch between your running kernel and the version the 
module is built for.

You say you upgraded your kernel...you did boot to that kernel before 
building the Nvidia drivers, right?

Try loading the nvidia driver by hand.

>From root's home directory, try this:
modprobe nvidia

and if it can't find it, that will clue you in to #1 or #3 above.

If it finds it, but can't load it, see what the error message is.

Usually, Nvidia's makefile will try to load the module after installing to 
make sure it works.  Did it give you any errors?
