Paul,

I would go back and get the *.rpm files and install them, but that's me. 
  When I setup these drivers I used the *.rpm and didn't have any issues 
with the install.  I'm running Mandrake 9.0, but they do have RH rpms as 
well.

Since you did the non-distrib specific install you may need to check on 
the final format of the nvidia.o driver.  Mandrake zips these files, 
does RH do that also?  Check in your 
/lib/modules/2.?.?/kernel/drivers/video directory for nvidia.o or 
nvidia.o.gz.

If you have a nvidia.o and all the other files are name.o.gz then just 
zip that puppy.  On the other hand if you have nvidia.o.gz and the other 
files are name.o then unzip.

If this isn't you issue then we can move on to the next idea.
