I assure you it is strictly an illusion. It's kind of like hiding
Explorer in Windows... you may not have an MSIE Window up, but rest
assured it's consuming resources behind your back.
However, I do find it amazing that the change in the look of launch
control made such a huge impact in the acceptance of the product
(mainly by those using it for free though). While there is not much
benefit in the new technique from a resource perspective, people just
hated the desktop look. Ironically (though somewhat offtopic), it seems
that people are wanting a more "desktop" like feel with things like
Mozilla... where tabbed browsing is now a MUST have feature. Very
confusing. In StarOffice, we hate the desktop look, but can live
with the slow startup time as long as we don't have to SEE the
desktop. In Mozilla, we want a lean, mean fast browser, but we
want all of the features of a desktop... sigh... It's no wonder
software programmers go insane after a few years.
