Well, I see it as different tools require different interfaces to enhance
productivity. I'm not fond of the "desktop" way of StarOffice at all. It
gets in my way, because I usually know exactly which piece of the Office
suite I want when I fire it up. I wouldn't mind "tabbed" windows (MDI)
within a single program...that would be nice. Excel "workbooks" are a good
illustration of how nice that can be.
As for browsers, Opera started the whole tabbed browser bit, and I must say
I'm addicted. I'm addicted to many features Opera has started, enough so
that I'm willing to pay to support it. Tabbed windows are just one thing.
Mouse gestures are fantastic...the best thing since sliced bread! And I
seem to remember reading that those are going/have gone into Mozilla.
For browsing, it's simply a matter of efficient use of screen real-estate,
and having everything in one place. At home, I typically keep about 15
tabs open at once. It's really nice for researching, price-comparisons,
etc.
