Another thing about attbi (comcast) is when they
are setting you up... I'd tell them that your USB
doesn't function right, that you are planning to
use Linux. Then you'll likely get a "real"
cable modem and you'll get a cheapo NIC also...
always a useful thing to have even if you already
have a NIC. Worked for me. I just know that
nowadays it's popular for them to give you a
USB based cable modem... several of my friends
have them and have had numerous issues.
My modem is the SB3100 (which I'm sure they
probably don't install anymore). Never had
a problem with it.
Since it is a "real" modem, it is plugged right
into my LinkSys DSL/Cable Router which is
configured to get an address via DHCP (technically
@home has always supported dhcp for their
routable address, but it pretty much never
changed... not so with the new attbi/comcast). I
think they force a change daily :-)
I can http://192.168.100.1 and view the modem config,
status and to can restart the cable modem from there
as well... which is kind of nice. Not sure about
any of their newer modems.
DSL is not available, nor is it likely to be
available (until someone figures out how DSL can
make money... not that anyone has figured it out
exactly with Cable.. it just carries more than
data today so that helps a bit) for a while.
I'm in far North Frisco.
