Try working with GRUB from its command line. You can try different
things. It understands filesystems, and you can search for the right
files, and even read files from the GRUB command line. Press 'c' to get
to the command line. There's even a help system.
What you describe sounds to me like you're failing to load an initrd,
but I don't know whether RH kernels even use initrd. If they do, try
looking for a file in the /boot directory named something like
initrd.img-<version>. If RH kernels don't use initrd, then that's not
what the problem is. :)
