I agree with Jack that DLT is the way to go *if you can afford them*.  I 
always used to think it was stupid to backup to other hard drives, but with 
current prices, it's a viable option now.

To get a good answer, you didn't give us enough info though.  Why tapes?  Is 
it just something to take offsite?  Something you have to mail?  Something you 
need to have a lot of so you can stick many versions of them on a shelf?  Or 
what?  Tapes are a classic solution to many problems, but if you told us the 
problem you're trying to solve, we may be able to point you in a direction 
that would help you better than tapes.
