[NTLUG:Discuss] alternate Linux install method

Howdy,
   I have one machine(i.e., a thinkpad 701) where this kind of install 
would be useful.  I want to minimize the number of times I move the 
drive.  The 701 has very different hardware(laptop video, and PCMCIA nic, 
for example) than any machine I would use for the install.  Is there 
anything special I should do to prepare for this? A pointer to a FAQ 
somewhere would be fine.  I've googled, but I have not found anything useful.
