>From a friend in the tech industry who has been displaced by cheap foreign
workers here on H1-B visas (I figure that this issue impacts all of us, even
though it isn't Linux-specific. If I have stepped in it for posting this, I
apologize and won't do it again)
=============
All;
The story below has some good implications: if you are trying to earn a
living and feed and support yourself and your family.
But the problem remains. Even if the H-1B cap reverts back to 65,000, that
is still 65,000 "temporary" foreign workers PER YEAR, and once they're here,
they get to stay for six years (forever if they get a green card). That
translates to a total at any one time over the next
six years, of 570,000 foreign workers in the US taking our jobs! On top of
that number, you can add the current 1,000,000 plus H-1B temporary foreign
workers who are already here, putting you and me out of work, driving down
wages of those lucky enough to still be working, and dragging down the
economy for all of us.
Our legislative leaders in Washington say they (the Government) needs to
create 1.M million new jobs. But, isn't it pretty clear to you, where these
1.4M jobs can be created literally overnight, simply by Congress doing the
RIGHT THING and voting a ZERO H-1B quota, and phasing the H-1Bs already
here, back to China and India over the next year or so?
It will take a "no action" by Congress this September for the H-1B quota to
revert back to 65,000 "new" H-1B visas per year level. We all know a "no
action" is something Congress is good at, but to let them off the hook with
"no action" is not enough.
We must continue to put pressure on our legislators and help shape public
opinion and increase public awareness by writing our senators and
congressmen, and especially writing "letters to the editor" whenever the
opportunity arises. And please keep in mind, these fine folks whose "yes"
votes on the H-1B issue put you out of work, also voted themselves a
"retirement" income of $15,000 of the taxpayer's dollars per month after a
single term. You would have to work pretty hard just to "honestly earn"
$15,000 in a month. Most of us would be happy earning a fraction of that,
but to start to even do that, we first need our jobs back.
