Yeah, sounds like it's not getting there.  What's in your 
/etc/hosts.allow?  Have an entry like sendmail: ALL?

That may be all the problem is.

Running a firewall on the linux box?  Can you telnet to it from the 
outside?  Router set up to forward connections to the box on port 25?

Did you change your client to use a name/password combo for outbound mail?

You did this part right?  And restarted senmdail?
