On install (you may have to re-install at this point) check the box for 
text login, if you are not sure what resolution you can use.  By the 
way, from what I have seen most Gateway laptops are not capible of more 
than 1024x768, and some can go as high as 1400x1050 - if that clue helps 
you.  Additionally, check the Gateway site for the specs of the model 
you have.
