Try tacking "3" or "single" onto the boot parameters--i.e. at the
LILO prompt, you might type "linux single".
"3" tells the kernel to boot into runlevel 3 (multiuser,
networking, no graphical login). "single" tells it to boot into
runlevel 1 (single user, no networking, no graphical login).
